Up close with bakery products.

The fog has gone, replaced by a bright but cold morning. For the first time in a year the water bowl outside the front door has a thin layer of ice on it. Bob finds this intriguing. It is definitely PON weather.

The owl family are also enjoying themselves. Six of them are sitting on the branches of the plane tree by the front gate. They screech as Bob and his master set off on their early morning walk. They are completely white on their undersides. How does that help them hunt ?

Sophie's bad leg continues to improve. Although unlikely to be as strong as the first leg that was operated on, it is now able to support her. The trick is stopping her from placing too much weight on the joint so that the fracture can repair itself. After the better parts of 5 months Sophie has become a bored and extremely difficult patient. Given half a chance she'd be off leaping and dancing. The next X-ray is set for the 24th. If all goes well she will embark on a series of gentle but ever increasing walks.

At the bakers Galette de Roi come in three sizes. Bob gets a small sliver. He is delighted.

His master buys four cakes , a baguette and two croissants. The bread and cakes are put on the back seat of the car. Bob hops up into the trunk. Cakes and dog are separated by a metal grille. This doesn't stop Bob from spending the journey home trying to 'liberate' the pastries.

Bobs efforts to get up close with bakery products reminds Angus  that the angelic duo will be 4 years old on the 9th.

Much unhappiness in the village. Someone ( ie one of the families in the four 'new' houses behind the churchyard ) has dumped 200 unwashed oyster shells in the village bins. The older villagers are aghast at the fact that the shells have been thrown in loose and haven't been put in  bag .... and at the smell.

Ah, the brioche type galette du roi, not the marzipan tarte kind. Not a fan of either, though these look nice and puffy.
Who in the village would have served 200 oysters? The list of suspects can't be long.

An irresistible title to today's post!
I am wondering do you get a good sighting of the owls in the early morning? What species are they?
Cheers, Gail.

Who can blame Bob trying to liberate a pastry or two, though I have to say that those don't look as yummy as others you've shown us. Are you using a different bakery? Like Sophie, we can't wait for the 24th, and hope it will be good news.

You've got your work cut out for you during this phase of Sophie's recovery. Gentle walks may be even more of a feat than expected.

Am I right in that the Galette de Roi is a French version of a King Cake? I envy Bob, I'd love a slight taste of the pastries!

Glad that Sophie is doing well - Tina Turner would envy that leg!! :-)

Bob looks better and better!

There is a similar Spanish version of the Galette du Roi, which has large, lurid coloured, jelly sweets all over it. It doesn't look in the least bit appetising.

The villagers go wild over oysters. The sort sold in wicker baskets at the supermarket. I'm betting on the man with the Corsican registered car with blacked out windows.

We think they're Emperors . All species seem to be rampant here in vole country.

This was a bakers in a town a 45 minute drive away. Bob gets attention wherever he goes.

She's ready to break the sound barrier and can't understand why we're stopping her. Much more difficult than the first leg.

Have never heard of King Cake but would guess so. For 12th night there's little porcelain figure that goes with it and is hidden inside a slice. The recipient can expect to be blessed with outstanding good luck - just as long as he doesn't bite down on the figure by mistake and break a tooth.

There's a definite improvement but still no luck with the eye. The blood tests were good.

Yes, it must be the same thing.

200 shells? That's a lot of oyster....

Keeping our prayers strong for Sophie's healing and Bob's recovery!

Is it the beginning of the end of the Village's peace! We hope the culprit is caught. Perhaps stocks should be put up under Swaying Jesus!

As long as there is the slightest chance of getting pastries, effort must be made.

Oh, Angus, not the Mafioso in your lovely little village?

Great.

I wouldn't object to liberating some of those pastries myself.

I'm right there with you ... and so is Mr Beau. Hard to believe our lab puppy is over a year old! He was neutered today, so special love is headed his way.
I'm so happy Mr. Bob is getting better (he is our HERO)! Each and every day things seem to be improving at our favorite (and only) morning blog. Thanks to Angus and the Font !
I pray Mr Bob's eyelid improves and out Diva's leg finally heals.

A big day for Mr. Beau! He deserves a special pastry or two today. A year old plus already? Extra pats for Mr. Beau.

I think I meant "pets."

Thank you for sharing the photos of the cakes each week, we seldom see such tasty treats.

I think owls swoop on their prey silently and from behind. At least the owl that wooshed down on my dog when he was a puppy did it that way. Talons down, skimmed across my dogs back before the owl flew off and then came back and started circling us. I promptly picked up my puppy and ran home. Didn't matter what color that owls underside was, it was frightening.

The jelly sweets in the Spanish and South French versions are not jelly sweets at all but candied fruits, meant to represent the jewels decorating the Kings' crowns. Properly done, they are actually delicious.
